The Siri to Indoor Gardening

I have been scouring the internet for ideas… As a designer we are always seeking inspiration and ideas around us. Then I happened to have stumbled on a really grand business idea and just couldn’t stop thinking about it. The itch to write about it persisted and so here we are, another blog post…

It a concept we as Shop Nanjala celebrate and love (absolutely). Infact it mirrors what we stand for and believe in. The belief in the power of the outdoors and how conserving nature is gradually becoming the new status symbol. To prove this, just look around you, there is a lot of conversation about our environment and the impact that global warming is having on our planet.

I bumped onto a new site, with details of a soon-to-be-launched brand in California called Noci Sonoma https://www.nocisonoma.com. This brand is giving me no sleep. Such a simple lovely concept is transformed into a wonderful business idea. Of course the brand is really niche and may not, if ever, work in this market. But what I admire about it is the fact that, gardening has been packaged in a sophisticated way to create a visionary venture that raises gardening to almost celebrity status. I’m imagining how discerning couples, their guests, or friends shall be gathering together, to pick organic, natural produce from Noci’s garden, communally own a piece of it and then enjoy a meal fresh from the same garden. Greenhouse (or rather greening your home) is so in!

Well at Shop Nanjala we recognize that a love for nature has profound benefits to the universe. We won’t even go far and start to discuss the complex benefits like reduction of human carbon footprint and all that gibberish. Ours is all about celebrating nature in our own small way by endearing our customers to grab a piece of mother nature and perhaps share their home space with living plants. Whether you have a big fat garden or the tiniest of apartments with no balcony, “we have something for everyone!” (stolen from the Property Show).

When we look around “The Green City in the Sun”, “It’s estimated that half of Nairobi’s population lives in the slum and the rest of the city dwellers live in relatively good housing conditions. To accommodate the growing middle class, many new apartments and housing developments are being built in and around the city.  – Wikipedia.com.

Clearly Nairobi, has a huge population that lives indoors. We believe that everyone should and must have a plant in their home. Whether indoors or outdoors, plants normally are happy. It just depends on what type of plant you select, where you place it and how you take care of it. So today, we shall share with you 3 secrets on why indoor gardening is just the coolest!

  1. Science Proves Gardening Improves the Human Wellbeing

When you embellish interior spaces with houseplants, you’re not just adding greenery. These living organisms interact with your body, mind and home in ways that enhance the quality of life. Plants like the snake plant, boston fern and bamboo palm are known to humidify and purify the air by reducing the levels of formaldehyde. To confirm this, studies have been done where plants were added to hospital rooms and there were speedy recovery rates of surgical patients, compared to patients in rooms without plants. Patients in rooms with plants request less pain medication, had lower heart rates and blood pressure, experience less fatigue and anxiety, and were released from the hospital sooner. Another study by the Agricultural University of Norway discovered that sickness rate fell in offices that had plants by a record 60%! Plants in office settings decreases fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu-like symptoms.

  1. Some Indoor Plants are Just Cool for Months on End

We know how everyone wants that gift bouquet of roses to last for longer, or how when one buys that pretty orchid and once it looses its bloom, reblooming it is near impossible! So yeah, whether you want a short stint of beautiful fresh cut flowers or ambient plants that last for years, they just wonderful décor items in a home. When making consideration for a potted plants, some good options include the likes of the medicinal Aloe Vera, the slow growing Cycad, fiery Sticks of Fire, showy Kalanchoe species and unique cactii can last for months, even years in a home. Because some are slow growing, there is no fear of it overtaking the pot. Moreover, they bring a fresh architectural attractiveness to the home that is second to none.

  1. You get to Create your Own Forest!

You know that tongue in cheek saying that says “ When you go black you never go back 😉 well for plants the saying is “When you get a plant you never stop”. There is a fascination in nurturing plants to grow. So go ahead, purchase one plant, another and another and soon you will have an excellent collection of several plants. If a room seems to be too dark to sustain a healthy plant, don’t worry. We are blessed with fantastic weather! Most indoor plants originate in tropical and subtropical regions, in particular equatorial forests, and they thrive in dim environments and filtered light. The ideal spot is in front of a large window facing east or west, filtered if necessary through a net curtain. Most plants just need at least 6 hours of sunlight.

And finally, don’t be afraid to try different locations until you find the best spot for your miniature forest.

We hope you get inspired to grow your own indoor garden. Feel free to send us a shout at hello@shopnanjala.com for any advice, requests or take a peek at our own potted plants that are great for the indoors. We really would love to see your home thrive with living plants! “We Crave Great Design”.
