Purple Fig Fruit Seedling

Botanical name: Ficus carica

Common names: Edible fig, Purple fig fruit

The purple fig tree commonly grown in Kenya is Ficus carica, a deciduous fruit tree valued for its sweet, tear-shaped fruits that turn reddish-purple when ripe. Though not indigenous, it thrives in Kenya’s warm climate and is often grown in home gardens, small orchards, and even in large pots on patios or balconies.

Its fruits are soft, fragrant, and filled with tiny edible seeds. The flesh inside is sweet and fragrant, with a pleasant grainy texture due to the edible seeds. These fruits are not only consumed fresh but also used in preserves and traditional snacks.

Propagation is done using hardwood stem cuttings, which root easily in well-drained soil. The tree begins fruiting within 1–2 years, with full maturity reached in 3–5 years. It prefers full sun and benefits from pruning to improve shape and airflow.

While different from native figs like Ficus sycomorus, Ficus carica is a valuable addition to Kenyan agroecosystems, offering both nutrition and income potential.
