Albizia coriaria

Origin: Indigenous

Usually a huge, spreading tree up to 15 metres tall, but often smaller, with a twisted trunk. Its bark is grey-black rough and flaking. Leaves are a bring green when young, with 6-11 pairs of leaflets up to 3cm long, rectangular, with rounded tips. The Albizia Christa has many sweet-smelling, pink-white, half-spherical heads with crimson stamen threads above and white below. Flat purple-brown pods, typically lustrous, 10-21 cm in length, with long, pointed bases and flat, spherical seeds measuring around 1 cm.

The Albizia coriaria has various uses such as used for firewood, charcoal, timber, furniture, poles, boat building, medicine (roots and bark), feed, forage, shade, decorative, nitrogen-fixing, toothbrushes, veterinary medicine and banana ripening leaves.

Notes: The species is highly valued within the Luo community. The heartwood is especially robust and durable.
